Work Package 3: Compilation of Demand-Side Indicators

Description

The main contribution of WP3 is to compile the indicators defined for the demand side in WP1 and to model a consistent framework of energy service demand and related energy and emission flows in a selection of EU Member States. We will focus on three major areas of final energy demand and GHG emissions: mobility, buildings and manufacturing that account for 54% of Austrian and 46% of EU GHG emissions respectively.

For mobility, input data include e.g. the stock of vehicles, actual passenger and freight transport performance by transport mode as well as energy and emission intensities from the ODYSSEE database. With respect to energy services related to residential buildings – heating and cooling (well-tempered living space), hot water, cooking, freezing and cooling and lighting – indicators will be derived for Austria from an extended dataset for living space, building types, types of heating systems, energy demand (by source and activity) and emissions. Indicators for energy services, final energy demand and emissions are compiled for the manufacturing sector and embedded in a modelling approach that considers all levels of the energy system.

In addition to indicators covering economic or environmental aspects of sustainable development such as energy efficiency or CO2 efficiency, emphasis will be put on the social dimension of energy use (e.g. the gender dimension: access to mobility, gender differences in mobility, gendered division of labor in households). Data used to compile indicators for the social dimension will i.a. derive from the Odyssee database and include information on the affordability of different energy services.
